History

AG Malabar District

The Northern part of Kerala which includes six districts namely Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod is termed as 'Malabar'. The area was dominated mainly by Hindu and Muslim populations and the Christians were very nominal. It also has some Tribal pockets where people still live in primitive conditions. Fortunately the situation has changed by the arrival of one British missionary, Miss. C. S. Eady and later Mr. & Mrs. W. E. Davis, who started their mission work in Kannur & Vadakara in 1930s. Many congregations were established during these years. But because of World War II, they had to return to their native countries and leaving the believers like orphans, so they were forced to go back to their mother churches and the churches became inactive.

Later in 1977, Rev. Dr. V. T. Abraham came to Kannur to pioneer a church. Due to his persistence, hard work and vision, the vibrant and growing Kannur Assemblies of God Church was established as one of the biggest Assemblies of God Churches in Malabar. Rev. Dr. V. T. Abraham, who had served in the Executive committees of the Malayalam District and SIAG for several years, was lead by the Holy Spirit to start a Bible School, and thus Trinity Bible College was founded in 1994.

After a few years, the need for a separate district was strongly felt by the believers, Pastors and Pioneers of the Malabar section. The inconvenience to take part in the spiritual and administrative meetings which were held at the central and southern part of the State, the great need for evangelizing every unreached community and the big opportunities for planting churches and its growth using every resource inspired them for a separate district. As a result, the Malabar District of the SIAG came in to existence on the 3rd of October 1997. Rev. Dr. V. T. Abraham has been serving as the Superintendent of the Malabar District ever since from its formation.
